Eating for an Epileptic Lifestyle?
I have epilepsy, so there's a bunch of stuff I'm not allowed to eat. I can't have aspartame (so no diet soda, chewing gum, etc.), or MSG (so no Chinese food or other processed foods)...not that anybody should eat these things anyway! I also can't have caffeine (no soda, tea, or coffee for me). Also one of the side effects of my medicine is that it makes soda taste horrible so I can't even drink the caffeine free kind. My neurologist didn't tell me these things, I had to find them all out on my own through research. What I was wondering is if there's any other "bad things" that epileptics shouldn't have that anybody out there knew about. Sorry if I seem so lame, I'm just trying to be healthy so I don't have a seizure, I'm really sensitive to everything! Thanks in advance.

I just saw your question while looking for a group to join. I hope the below helps, I don't know when you posted the questions, but anyway, it never hurts to share....
I have TLE and get petit mal seizures. Regarding food and seizures, I had the same experiences as you...finding out what to eat and what not to...on my own and definitely not with the help of doctors. I actually monitored everything I eat and noticed what was causing seizures. The last dr I went to see almost made fun of what I was saying so I made sure never to see him again.
First - don't change medication based on what people say unless it is positive and useful. E.g. if someone "hates the medicine", don't listen to that, each person reacts differently to each type of medication. I've been changing medications for the past year and currently I'm on trileptal, and trying to get off tegretol.
Second - food. I make sure to keep a healthy and "natural" diet as additives are causing attacks, and I keep having them until my body clears them out. A lot of them I noticed on my own, some with the help of others.
- MSG: stay away. Nothing useful in that and I'm sure you already found lists of side effects online. Make sure you read ingredients on anything you buy, e.g. chips, as you will find it in almost every "salty" food you buy. You will also find it hidden under a lot of different names such as E621. Check it out online.
- Aspartame: same as MSG. I no longer have anything with aspartame or sugar free.
- Caffeine: I'm off coffee and most soft drinks. I've also switched to herbal teas.
- Red Meat: That triggers attacks immediately. I only have white meat including fish, chicken and pork. I also ready ingredients on everything to make sure they don't have additives from animals (e.g. gummies have beef fat).
- Certain Vegetables: note what you eat from vegetables and what happens...e.g. eggplants and green beens, you might be sensitive...you never know until you try.
- Make sure you eat enough, several times a day and don't let your nutrient levels in your blood drop. I.e. don't let side effects of your medicine take control, and don't let your weight drop significantly.
- Exercise enough and stay active
- Alcohol: I'm off that completely now
- Cigarettes: I don't smoke
