How good is the ps3 what r the chances that it will fail will it break and or overheat alot?

Chances of PS3 failure is rated at < 2%. The most common defect in those units will be a broken Bluray drive, which, if it fails, will probably fail within the first 3 months. Also occasional issues have been noted with graphics card failure (sudden appearance of jagged polygons, etc), but I would rate those as very rare (<1% of the defects). I've only heard of 1 case of the graphics failure, and that was on a forum.
In any case, the PS3 will not overheat if you follow the manual. It recommends 4" of ventilation on the sides in order to allow for proper cooling. Also, do not run the PS3 in an enclosed entertainment center. That causes heat to build up inside.
If there is an excess heat buildup, the PS3 will turn off by itself. The problem is also evidenced by a higher rate of game freezes, and hangs. If that occurs, simply turn off the PS3 for ~1 hour and it will be fine.
You will not need a fan product such as the "Intercooler" for the PS3. Those actually could cause more heat to build up inside the system, and will fail.
As far as that graphics card failure goes, I would probably attribute that to environmental factors such as cigarette smoke. Smoke can infiltrate the system, and get caked on the components, thus cause it to short out.
