How can they prove that a cigarette butt started a bushfire?
Wouldn't everything be so burnt up that you couldn't tell if it were what caused it, or just a stale cigarette butt on the side of the road?

I tried Yahoo searching for an answer. Well, read the first article link below. Apparently, they may find cigarette butts. If the wind was blowing the fire away from the butt, then the butt could still survive the fire. In this article, it seems they are not sure if it was a campfire or a cigarette, as both were found at the fire's point of origin.
In the second article link below, it talks about how dogs are used in arson investigations. It mentions a black lab who is trained to smell accelerants, like gasoline, that could be used to start fires. I imagine some dogs may be trained to track other scents, too.
You could probably look up books on arson investigation at your local library, or ask an insurance agent or police officer. Good luck in finding the right answer!
