What exactly is in a cigarette that makes it carcinogenic?
And would it be possible to make a cigarette that is safe to use?
(P.S. I'm a non-smoker. I just heard on the news about a class action lawsuit concerning "lite" cigarettes and I thought of this question.) Thanks

nicotine, tar, formaldehyde(in low quantities used as a preservative), pesticides (used on the tobacco crops) and thousands of other chemicals.
I don't know if it is possible to make a safe cigarette. Whey you think about it, you are inhaling smoke into your lungs. No matter what you smoke, it can't be good for you.
I believe these lawsuits are frivolous. These people can't say that they did not know smoking was bad for their health. "Lite" cigarettes have warnings on them too. Now, 30 years ago, maybe some people didn't know smoking is bad for them. But unless you have lived under a rock for the last 30 years, you know smoking is hazardous to your health. Take some personal responsibility for goodness sake. (not you asker, just venting)
