Cigarette Use
How does cigarette smoke go from outside the body to inside the blood stream?
I know that cigarette smoke contains poisons like Carbon Monoxide, Nicotine, and Tar. And I know that ultimately, they end up in your blood stream. What is the anatomical path that these toxins take? Thanks

It takes seven seconds from that first puff to have nicotine get to your brain.
It is absorbed through the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, pharynx,
and of course the lung. The nicotine diffuses into the blood stream.
The carbon monoxide is also easily absorbed. It's a simple molecule.
Most of the other 7000 chemicals have contact with the mucous membranes
of the upper aerodigestive tract, the esophagus, stomach, bladder, etc.
At least 60 of these chemicals are known potent carcinogens.
That's why we see cancers of the throat, mouth, nasal cavity, esophagus,
stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix, and acute myeloid leukemia
caused by the toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke. At least 30% of all
cancer deaths in the USA can be attributed to smoking. Smoking cigarettes
is not a sane thing to do, but it is an addiction like any other drug addiction
only worse than most.
