Membrane bound receptors are located on the cells in our body. Certain drugs have certain target receptors and can either agonize (promote) or antagonize (inhibit) the activity of these receptors. Nicotine acts on the nicotinic receptors in our cells. Smoking nicotine, cigarettes, creates vasoconstriction, increased heart rate, and heightened respiratory rate.
Other drugs work by inhibiting or stimulating enzymes in our bodies. For example, aspirin is an anti-inflammatory drug (also anti-pyretic, analgesic, etc). This drug works by inhibiting the production of COX, cyclooxegenase. The COX enzyme reacts with arachidonic acid and create prostaglandins and thromboxanes. These products are responsible for platelet activity, clotting, in our blood.
Another way drugs can act is by inhibiting the synapse of our neurons. Pain transmission is sent from our skin to our brain in the central nervous system. Pain is transmitted with the release of glutamate and substance P. Products like morphine, enkaphalins, cannabis (cannabanoids), work by blocking the release of glutamate and substance P. This is done by the brain in the descending pathway. The final result, is a weakened pain transmission to the brain.
